WARNINGThe Portrait 3D printer comes pre-calibrated out of the box, but it can be necessary to perform re calibrations after certain operations like replacing a hotend, tuning fine values for dual material models, etc.

Before we begin…

  • Make sure the nozzles and build plate are clean before calibrating
  • Load PLA Tough in ext1.png (required for the pre-installed calibration test)
  • Load PLA+ in ext2.png (required for the pre-installed calibration test)
    • Use a different color than the one loaded in ext1.png if you want to do an XY (dual nozzle) calibration later
WARNINGZ Offset calibration and Build Plate calibration need to be performed following the order displayed below. Z Offset always needs to be performed before the build plate calibration.

STEP 1Z Offset

The Z Offset calibration allows the user to set the distance between each nozzle and the build plate in order for the first layer to be laid down properly, this ensures proper adhesion and accurate model creation.

  1. On the touch screen, go to Setup » Calibration » Z Offset.
  2. ext1.png will be automatically be selected and move into position along with the bed. Wait until both Hotend and bed are in position.
  3. Use the arrow keys to make the nozzle touch the build plate slightly without pressing against it.
  4. Select ext2.png when you’re done and wait until Hotend 2 and bed are both in place before you perform the same steps as for the previous Hotend.
  5. Press Save and allow it to save your settings. You will be asked to perform a manual reboot after it is done.
  6. To check the results of the calibration you’ll need to do some test prints. Go to Print » Print from local file » Calibration files.
  7. Print Z Offset T0.gcode to evaluate the calibration of ext1.png and Z Offset T1.gcode for ext2.png.
    If the results are good, then you’re done.
    If not, go back into Z offset calibration and make minor adjustments based on your test print results using the pictures below as a reference:

STEP 2Build plate

Build plate calibration sets the parameters for the active bed leveling of the printer which allows the printer to extrude material evenly across the entire build plate.

Printers with 3 point calibration probe 3 different points on the build plate to generate a virtual plane while printers with 25 point calibration probe 25 different points to generate a mesh leveling grid.

After the settings have been saved, the printer will probe the center of the build plate before each print to define the Zero setup position onto which all offset calibration parameters are applied.

  1. On the touch screen, go to Setup » Calibration » Build plate.
  2. Then push Calibrate.
  3. The printer will now probe the bed at 25 (or 3) different points, creating a square matrix from the front to the back.
  4. Press the back arrow until you’re back at the main menu (Print / Setup).
  5. Go to Print » Print from local file » Calibration files.
  6. Select and print 5_points.gcode to evaluate your calibration.

STEP 3XY Offset

XY offset sets the position between the 2 nozzles, this calibration ensures both nozzles positioning will be appropriate when printing dual material prints.

  1. The first step is to see if you need to calibrate your printer’s XY Offset. Press Print » Print from local file » Calibration files.
  2. Select and print XY Offset.gcode.
  3. Once the printer is done printing the calibration test, measure the alignment of the two parts of the piece using a caliper.
  4. Go to Setup » Calibration » XY Offset.
  5. Adjust the XY offset values based on the test print so both layers are perfectly aligned by pressing the arrow keys for each axis.
  6. Press Save and allow it to save your settings. You will be returned to the main calibration menu when it’s done.
  7. Power cycle the printer. Wait 15 seconds before turning the printer ON again.
  8. To check the results of the calibration you’ll need to do a test print. Go to Print » Print from local file » Calibration files.
  9. Now go and print another XY Offset.gcode and examine the results.
    If the results are good, you’re done. If not, start over.
